Women’s Condition in The
Victorian Period
In the Victorian
times, women were responsible for children, for bringing them in their
wombs for nine months, and raise them with kindness, meanwhile the father was mostly distant, rigorous and represented a
powerful authority figure in every decision made. Women had to surrender
to his power, and men could do whatever they wanted. At the same time, women
were considered "hysterical" because they were emotional and all their
evils were associated with their sexuality.

At that time, the sexuality of women was linked
with hysteria. Women knew nothing of themselves
since they were raised in order to jump into the arms of wealthy man that would
solve her economic problems and give her "peace of mind" for the rest
of her life.
Women had their freedom restricted and they could
not even access to formal studies because it was considered useless; therefore,
women just took care of the house and children although many fought to have
the same rights as men.
For example, the daughter of Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, dedicated to a life of studying
despite the fact that women were not considered the best candidates to get a
formal education.
Recent Times
The hysteria of Victorians scandalized many and hurt
the lives of a lot of young girls. Nowadays, those symptoms of
"madness" are natural, because they represent the hormonal processes
that women go through every month.
At the present time, the possibilities to study are
many. As matter of fact, people could say that the woman who does not enrolls
in an education program is because she decided not to.
